Aeroflot has acquired a 49% stake in Aeromar, Russia’s largest in-flight catering company, from Germany’s Lufthansa, with the deal having closed on September 1, according to Aeroflot. The deal is unusual due to Aeroflot being sanctioned under EU laws.
However, President Vladimir Putin authorized Aeroflot to acquire Lufthansa’s stake in March this year. The order permitted Aeroflot to acquire 4,900 ordinary shares in JSC Aeromar, owned by Truffle 2 GmbH, a Lufthansa affiliate. Lufthansa had announced intentions to sell the stake in Aeromar back in September 2022.
Aeromar was incorporated in 1995 and is based at Aeroflot’s home airport of Sheremetyevo. The company has a workforce of several thousand personnel.
The most recent results under its German management has been that Aeromar swung to a net loss of over ₽511 million (US$5.9 million) in 2024 from a net profit of (US$727,000) ₽63 million in 2023, even though revenue had jumped 37% to ₽19.4 billion (US$224 million). The company said that rising costs of sales and increasing management and commercial expenses substantially pressured the financial results. New Russian management and investment will be expected to turn the business around.
Last year, Aeroflot carried 55.3 million passengers, similar to 2024. Of these, 42 million passengers were transported on domestic routes, and 13.3 million passengers on international routes. The international segment has grown during 2026 with Q1 data showing an 8.9% increase in overseas travel.
