Russia’s FESCO shipping has completed its first direct ship call to Ho Chi Minh City, on Vietnam’s east coast. The service operates on FESCO’s Baltorient Line (FBOL) service, which takes in St. Petersburg, as well as ports in India and China. The transit time from St. Peterburg to Ho Chi Minh City is about 34 days. The route uses FESCO’s own assets and transits via the Suez Canal without calling at any European ports.
FESCO’s container ship arrived at the SP-ITC terminal in Ho Chi Minh City on May 2, and left the same day for Shanghai. FESCO established its Vietnamese operations late last year.
Herman Maslov, Vice President of the FESCO Line Logistics Division said that: “A few years ago, we successfully connected Vietnam’s ports directly with Vladivostok. Now, in order to optimally distribute container flows, we are connecting Vietnamese terminals with St. Petersburg. The first ship call of our container ship to Ho Chi Minh City as part of the FBOL line has demonstrated that this can be a popular destination for shipping goods from Southeast Asia to Russia and back.”

The rotation of the service includes the key Chinese ports of Qingdao, Lianyungang, Shanghai, Ningbo, Yantan, as well as the Indian ports of Navasheva and Mundra. In addition, the FBOL service is connected to ports in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and other Asian countries via feeder connections.
Vietnam has a free trade agreement with Russia via the Eurasian Economic Union and is also a BRICS partner state. The two countries have plans to increase bilateral trade to US$15 billion by 2030.
