Indian Prime Minister Modi has agreed with Russian President Vladimir Putin that India may establish a further two new consulates in Russia. Currently, India possesses an Embassy in Moscow, and Consulates in St.Petersburg and Vladivostok. These will be joined by new diplomatic consulates to be opened in Kazan and Yekaterinburg.
Kazan is a cultural and educational hub and an emerging economic centre in Russia, and the capital of the Tatarstan Republic. Kazan’s metropolitan population is about 3.5 million, with the city to host the annual BRICS Heads of State meeting in October.
Yekaterinburg is Russia’s fourth largest city, and also an important economic centre. It is the capital of the Urals Federal District, and has a metropolitan population of about 3.7 million.
Vladivostok is on Russia’s Pacific coast, and an important shipbuilding and diamond trading centre. Important Indian investors in both these industries are sited in the Vladivostok Free Trade Zone. It is the second largest city in the Russian Far East and close to the border with China. It has a population of about 650,000.
St.Petersburg is a major sea port and shipbuilding base, with joint Russia-Indian investments in the shipbuilding industry. It is Russia’s second largest city with a population of 6.5 million.
Moscow is the Russian capital, its largest city and its political and financial centre. Moscow has a metropolitan population of over 22 million.
