The Indian shipping regulator has extended the accreditation of four Russian companies providing Protection and Indemnity (P&I) insurance for vessels calling at the country’s ports for one month, according to the Indian Directorate General of Shipping.
Russian insurers Soglasie, Yugoria, Sberbank Insurance, and ASTK Insurance have all had their insurance licenses extended to 20 March 2026. The temporary extension avoids a gap in marine liability insurance coverage.
In addition, permits issued to other Russian insurance companies continue to be valid. For instance, permits for Sogaz, AlfaStrakhovanie, and VSK are valid until February 2030, and for Ingosstrakh until February 2029. Western insurance companies pulled out of the Russian market in 2022, leaving the way open for Asian insurance regulators and companies to fulfill the need. Both Indian and Chinese insurance and reinsurance companies provide cover for Russian shipping.
Shipowners’ liability insurance is a mandatory condition for vessels entering ports and performing cargo operations, as it covers liability to third parties, including pollution risks and other claims related to maritime activities.
