Khabarovsk Highway To Be Extended to Border With China At Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island

Published on March 23, 2026

The Khabarovsk bypass will be extended to the exit on Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island, where a new road checkpoint between Russia and China is currently being built. Nikolai Dubinin, the minister of economic development of the Khabarovsk region, stated that regional authorities expect to conclude a corresponding agreement by the end of this year, creating a multi-lane border crossing for an additional 5 km long section. This part will be a toll road.

The original Khabarovsk ring road, totalling 27 km, was opened for traffic in July 2022. It was the first high-speed route in the Russian Far East.

The new construction will alleviate a bottleneck at the exit from the road and open a specific exit to Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island, where work is currently underway to create another road checkpoint between Russia and China. The checkpoint itself is promised to be fully launched in 2028 and will be able to process 250 trucks, 50 buses, and 100 passenger cars per day, with a total annual cargo turnover of 1.3 million tonnes.

The checkpoint will provide another transport corridor between Russia and China. Currently, cross-border transportation between Khabarovsk and Ji’amusi in China is carried out by ferry across the Amur River, as well as by a temporary winter crossing. The new road complex will be the first in Khabarovsk Krai that will not be closed during ice formation or ice breakup, allowing for year-round transportation with China.
