Rosatom Negotiating The Construction Of A Nuclear Power Plant In Tanzania

Rosatom is discussing the construction of a small nuclear power plant in Tanzania, according to Samia Suluhu Hassan, Tanzania’s President. She was speaking at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum and stated, “We’re transitioning to clean energy. We’re interested in the sort of energy mix that will enable us to generate clean energy and interested in building small nuclear power plants, which Rosatom is currently discussing with Tanzania.”

In 2025, Rosatom launched a pilot facility at the Mkuju River uranium project in Tanzania, one of the most promising in the world. The deposit has explored uranium reserves of more than 44,000 tonnes, Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev has said. This means that Tanzania already has the source fuel for its own NPP and can probably develop as a major African exporter of uranium. 

While many in the West view Russia simply as a ‘gas station’, Rosatom is currently involved in over 80% of new NPP builds worldwide and is a world leader in helping developing countries transition to cleaner energy. In contrast, Europe has tended to neglect nuclear power and remains dependent on hydrocarbons, which it also needs to import.
