The Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk, and Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev discussed prospects for pursuing joint investment projects and measures to further increase cargo traffic between Russia and Azerbaijan at a meeting in Baku on Monday (March 2).
A joint statement said that “There are extensive opportunities for implementing medium-term and long-term joint investment projects. We also discussed “measures to further enhance cargo traffic between Russia and Azerbaijan by road, by rail and by sea, and improving the effective work of checkpoints on the Russian-Azerbaijani border and the need for their further modernization.”
Overchuk and Mustafayev separately discussed issues concerning the further development of the International North-South Transport Corridor, including steps to boost the route’s capacity and update its transport and logistics infrastructure.

The forthcoming Russia-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Economic Cooperation Commission, which Overchuk and Mustafayev co-chair, will be held in Azerbaijan in April.
The North-South international transport corridor connects northern Europe with states of the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean regions via Russia, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. The agreement to create this multimodal corridor was signed in 2000 between Russia, Iran and India. It currently includes 12 countries. The corridor consists of three routes, namely a western route along the western shore of the Caspian Sea, an eastern route along the eastern shore, and a trans-Caspian route across the Caspian Sea. Both Russia and Azerbaijan are members of the Commonwealth of Independent States and have a trade agreement between them.
