Russia has received the right to export livestock products to Cuba, in moves that should provide a boom for Russian exporters operating in this sector.
The Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) has been looking at developing foreign markets, and an audit of the Russian system for control and oversight of animal-origin food production carried out this year by Cuba’s National Center for Animal and Plant Health. Cuba subsequently recognized Russia’s current control and oversight system.
Russian enterprises producing poultry meat, pork, beef and dairy products listed in the Cerber component of the Federal State Information System for Veterinary Medicine’s export register can now ship their products to the Cuban market unimpeded.
This does not only extend only to products but may also include genetic samples that can assist with improving Cubas’ own animal livestock.
According to the World Population Review Cubans consume an average 19kg of pork per annum, more than the Brazilians, an average of 8kg of beef, similar to China’s consumption, and 30kg of chicken per annum, 5kg more per annum than the average Chinese.
The United States has the highest per capita consumption rates in the world, averaging 30kg of pork, 38kg of beef and 52k of chicken. Americans eat about double the amount of meat that Cubans do.
Russia’s per capita annual consumption of these products is 28kg of pork, 12.5kg of beef and 31kg of chicken, or about 60% of the American total meat consumption.
