Grenada is a Caribbean nation, about 150 km north of Venezuela, a key Russian ally in Latin America. It has a population of about 115,000 and is relatively affluent, with a GDP (PPP) per capita in excess of US$20,000. Its total GDP is US$2.3 billion, earned mainly through the production of spices such as nutmeg, mace, and tropical fruits and vegetables. It also has a developed tourism industry.
The Caribbean has grown in importance in Russia’s diplomatic outreach as Moscow seeks to gain acceptance for its global policies in creating a fairer, multilateral global management infrastructure within organizations such as the United Nations and is looking to enlist support from smaller nations as well as develop trade. The Grenada tourism sector will be attractive to Russian holidaymakers.
