The European markets loss of Russia as a consumer market is creating new wealth elsewhere, as illustrated by Russia importing 30,500 tonnes of fish and seafood from Turkiye in H1 2024, a 35% increase from the same period last year, according to the analytical center of the Russian Fish Union.
Turkish exports to Russia increased by 15% to US$153 million in value terms. This is small fry when compared to Russia’s huge industrial imports, however, represents a significant market shift in a highly competitive industry. US$153 million buys a lot of fish.
In particular, imports of frozen trout increased by more than 40% to almost 18,000 tonnes, and imports of chilled trout increased by almost 80% to 9,000 tonnes. Imports of frozen sea bass (pictured above) increased by 25% to 500,000 tonnes.
Now, more than 50% of Turkish exports of frozen fish and 14% of exports of chilled fish go to Russia, the Fish union said. Frozen fish accounts for 58% of Russia’s fish and seafood imports from Turkiye in monetary terms.
