Russia Sends Direct Freight Train To India

India

Russian Railways Logistics has sent a full container train along the INSTC route from Chelyabinsk, in the Russian Urals region, to Mundra Port, in Mumbai, India.

The train, consisting of 62 twenty-foot containers with oats, followed the eastern rail route of the INSTC North–South to Iran’s Bandar Abbas Port and was then shipped to Mundra. The transit time from Chelyabinsk to Mumbai is just 30 days, which is 5 days faster than previous transport routes. The doubling of the number of containers in the train from 31 to 62 units indicates the scaling of the logistics service and an increase in operational efficiency.

Russian Railways is continuing to increase the volumes of agricultural product transport to India. The use of the INSTC route allows for significant reduction in cargo delivery times, reduces costs, and facilitates the growth of trade ties between the two countries.

Sergey Levin, the Director of the Multimodal Transport Department of Russian Railways Logistics, stated that “We are ready to help integrate Russian agricultural producers into international logistics chains both through our own transport solutions and through cooperation with others, including foreign, market participants. We take a comprehensive approach to solving the problem of diversifying export routes and satisfying the demand for efficient and reliable logistics service in traffic with India and the Middle East.”

The move further underlines the growing infrastructure developments between Russia and Asia and the growing closeness between the two regions in terms of trade growth and potential. India alone has a market of 1.45 billion, over three times larger than the European Union markets that Russia traditionally served.
