Russia To Export Animal Feed To The Philippines

Philippines

Russia has obtained the right to export animal-origin feed meal to the Philippine market, the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) has said, stating that “The Bureau of Animal Industry of the Philippines has certified two enterprises from the Belgorod and Bryansk regions for the supply of this product.”

The enterprises are Bryansky Broiler LLC and CJSC SK Korocha from Belgorod. Both companies  are part of the Miratorg agricultural holdings business.

The Philippines is strategically situated on key shipping lanes that link continental Asia with Australia and other island countries. It is Asia’s only Catholic nation.

The Philippines’ industries consist of electronics assembly, aerospace/parts, agribusiness, automotive/parts, IT, and business process outsourcing. Food processing, furniture, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, metal casting and mining shipbuilding as well as textile tourism are also key sectors.

The Philippines is a member of ASEAN, and also a signatory to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) which also includes Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand. Trade in goods and services, investment, intellectual property, e-commerce, competition, small and medium-sized businesses, and government procurement are all covered by the RCEP agreement.

The Philippines has a population of slightly over 109 million. It has a GDP (PPP) of US$1.4 trillion, a GDP per capita (PPP) of US$12,191, and an anticipated 2025 GDP growth of 7%.

Bilateral trade with Russia in 2021 stood at US$1.16 billion, and has decreased somewhat since, mainly due to the Philippines being discouraged from trade development by the United States, with whom Manila enjoys good relations, and especially as concerns perceived maritime security threats from China. Russia-Philippines bilateral trade during 2024 is believed to have reached about US$600 million.

That said, in October 2023, the two countries convened the 3rd Joint Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation (JCTEC) and focused on strengthening cooperation in key sectors such as mining, automotive, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture. There is some Russian tourism to the Philippines islands, and there are direct winter sun flights between the two countries from Irkutsk to Manila.

Russia exports mainly industrial products such as petroleum, iron and coal to the Philippines, while the Philippines exports mainly agricultural products such as coconuts and some fruits.
