Russia To Provide Egypt with Long-Term Nuclear Power Support

Egypt

Russia will continue supporting its Egyptian partners throughout the life cycle of its nuclear project, including long-term supplies of reactor fuel and maintenance of the nuclear power plant, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the ceremonial installation of the reactor vessel for the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, in which he took part via video call.

Putin said, “Russia will continue supporting its Egyptian partners throughout the entire life cycle of the nuclear project. This applies to long-term supplies of reactor fuel, nuclear power plant maintenance, and spent nuclear material management.”

He added that Rosatom is ready to share its unique technologies with Egypt and others, including the assembly of small modular reactors and the use of peaceful nuclear energy in medicine and agriculture.

Russia’s TMH Energy Solutions, part of Transmashholding, has provided diesel generators for Egypt’s El Dabaa NPP. TMH Energy CEO Andrei Vasiliev has said that “Diesel generating backup is an important part of ensuring any nuclear power plant can be used safely, and El Dabaa is no exception. We are providing the El Dabaa NPP with 20 diesel generators, with five at each of its four units. We supply equipment not only to El Dabaa NPP but also to a whole range of other power plants that are being built, and we are constantly interacting with clients connected with Rosatom’s new sites.”

The Intergovernmental Agreement on the construction of El Dabaa NPP, the first nuclear power plant in Egypt, was concluded in November 2015, and the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract was signed in 2016. The design for the power station includes four 1200-MW power units with VVER-1200 reactors. Rosatom Group plans to commission the first unit in 2028.
