Russia To Start Exporting Lentils To India

The humble lentil has entered the products Russia will now export to India, as India’s Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has said Russian lentils have passed the required quarantine phytosanitary requirements and has obtained the right to supply lentils to India on a regular basis.

Trial shipments began in 2022. Data from the Argus-Fito federal government information system indicate that Russia had ramped up supplies of leguminous crops to India 23-fold year-on-year to 545,000 tonnes since the beginning of the year as on September 22, 2024.

Lentil consumption in India has risen to around 3 million tons, but can only provide about half of that from domestic production, and needs to import more than 1.3 million tons of lentils annually. Russia’s new supplies make up about 35% of its current total shortfall.

Most of Russia’s lentil production is grown in the Altai region in southern Siberia, with Saratov, Omsk, Penza and Orenburg also all producing Lentils.

This new, sizeable Russian export market is noticeable for the coordinated manner in which Russian diplomats and producers have been working in tandem to identify new supply chain needs in Asia and act in concert to fill them.
