Russia To Transport Aluminium To Armenia Via Azerbaijan

In signs of the continuing normalisation of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Russia is to start supplying aluminum to Armenia via Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan Railways has stated that “A new transit shipment will pass from Russia through Azerbaijan to Armenia on May 7. The cargo consists of two railcars loaded with aluminum.”

Aluminum will be the fourth type of cargo shipped from Russia to Armenia via Azerbaijan. Grain products, fertilizers and buckwheat have already been transported. Armenia is landlocked and wholly dependent on other countries for imports. It fought – and lost – an ill-advised war with Azerbaijan in 2020. Transit shipments to Armenia via Azerbaijan eventually recommenced in the autumn of 2025.

Azerbaijan Railways said nine more railcars loaded with Russian grain would be sent to Armenia via Azerbaijan on the same day as the aluminium transits.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said this week that from November 2025 to May 2026, some 28,000 tonnes of various cargo, primarily from Russia, had been shipped to Armenia via Azerbaijan. Russia is the world’s third largest aluminium producer after China and India.
