Russia exported around 2.7 million tonnes of wheat to Bangladesh in the 9M January-September this year, up 42% from the 1.9 million tonnes exported in the same period last year, according to the Russia’s Agroexport Centre.
Bangladesh is the third largest importer of Russian wheat this year. Egypt is in first place, while Turkiye is second. All are BRICS nations of varying degrees. Egypt is a full member, Turkyie a BRICS Partner, while Bangladesh has an equity stake in the New Development Bank.
The BRICS are in the process of creating an intra-BRICS grain trading platform to better regulate grain trade prices. Russia and China ae among the largest grain producers globally, but grain commodities exchanges are primarily based in the West and dominated by Western buyers who manipulate the market to their benefit.
