Russia’s Damate Group, a leading producer of turkey meat in Russia, has received the right to export its products to Malaysia. The company has stated that “The first regular container shipments are already being assembled for dispatch. The company plans to ship the first batches of products by mid-December.”
Damate notes that it is the only company in the world to have received permission to export turkey meat to Malaysia. “Supplier status for this country’s market is a kind of quality mark, facilitating the development of sales in other markets of Southeast Asia.”
Damate was the first company in Russia to implement the Malaysian Halal management system, recognized worldwide as the strictest set of requirements for product quality and safety, personnel, religious practices and production and management processes at an enterprise.
The work to obtain the export permit was started in 2022. In 2024, the Damate poultry complex in the Penza region passed certification by the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) and the Halal International Center for Standardization and Certification (ICSC) for compliance with Malaysian standards.
In 2024-2025, the Damate turkey slaughter and processing plant underwent a series of audits involving inspectors from the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) for compliance with this country’s veterinary and sanitary requirements and Halal standards. Following the audits, positive decisions were made regarding market entry and the possibility of product supplies.
The company’s efforts to enter the Malaysian market were supported by the Russian Agriculture Ministry, Rosselkhoznadzor and the Russian Embassy in Malaysia.
Darya Lashchenko, Damate’s Deputy General Director for Marketing and Sales said that “For over ten years, Damate has gained significant experience in exporting turkey meat. This makes it possible to expand the geography of supplies and the product range. The Malaysian market appears extremely promising, and demand for turkey products is assessed as very significant. We plan to occupy a worthy place in the Malaysian meat market. We also expect that Malaysia could become a regional hub for supplying the company’s products to other Southeast Asian markets.”
Damate began developing its export division in 2015. To date, it has permits to supply products to more than 60 countries worldwide, including China, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Benin, Angola, and other countries in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
Damate develops several areas of agricultural business. In addition to turkey meat production, the group is engaged in the production of lamb and duck meat as well as milk processing. The group’s assets are located in the Penza, Rostov and Tyumen regions and in the North Caucasus Federal District. The land fund amounts to over 100,000 hectares in the group’s regions of presence.
Damate produced 241,500 tonnes of turkey meat in slaughter weight in 2024, up 2% compared to 2023.
In global poultry market consumption, while chicken dominates, turkey consumption is growing, especially with processed products as a leaner meat alternative. Turkey’s lower fat content makes it a popular substitute for ground beef. Turkey consumption in Malaysia is generally low and concentrated around the festive seasons, though it is increasing among urban populations, meaning Damate have spotted a potential growth market.
