The Russia-India Joint Venture BrahMos Aerospace, was established as a joint venture between India’s DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya. The company designs, develops, and produces the world-class Brahmos supersonic cruise missile, capable of launching from submarines, ships, aircraft, and land platforms.

Formed in February 1998, with the name being a combination of India’s Brahmaputra River and Russia’s Moskva River, it is one of the few defense entities that handles the entire life cycle of its products, from design and serial production to marketing, global delivery, and after-sales maintenance. The Brahmos missile travels at Mach 2.8, making it one of the fastest supersonic cruise missiles in active service. Extended-range variants reach up to 800 km.

The multirole system can engage both land and sea targets from various operational platforms. The company is also heavily investing in developing the next-generation BrahMos-II, an advanced hypersonic cruise missile. Brahmos now operates four production centers across India, with the newest facility – located in Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) significantly boosting overall missile output. That has become the companies largest, boosting production of the missile by 20%. India has four BrahMos manufacturing facilities, with the others located in Hyderabad and Thiruvananthapuram in southern India, and Pilani in Rajasthan.

With surging international demand, the Philippines became the first foreign nation to buy the shore-based anti-ship weapon system, with other countries in Southeast Asia such as Indonesia and Vietnam expressing strong interest in acquiring the tech. The Lucknow plant has manufactured the first batch of the missiles, BrahMos Aerospace co-director Aleksandr Maksichev has said; adding that the commissioning of the facility has significantly enhanced both the speed and capacity of BrahMos missile manufacturing. The Brahmos venture has also become highly profitable for both countries. With the new Lucknow plant now in production, export orders are sure to follow.
