South Korea Joining China & India In Northern Sea Route Development

Russia’s Rosatom, who provide nuclear powered icebreakers services in the Arctic, continues to develop collaboration with China and India along the Northern Sea Route (NSR), and South Korea is joining, Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev has stated.

Likhachev said that “We have maintained NSR cargo traffic at a record level of over 37 million tons over the past two years despite the severe sanctions pressure facing all Arctic projects. We aim to achieve a new record. Northern deliveries are developing. Chukotka received the necessary cargo before the ice formed in October 2025 for the first time in five years. This allowed the regional budget to save at least ₽100 million (US$1.3 million) on icebreaker escorts. Rosatom should begin delivering cargo to other regions as well this year.  We are implementing the president’s directive to create the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor. It will connect all territories adjacent to the NSR and combine the capabilities of seaborne, river way, railway, and roadway transport, both for the benefit of Russia and for international shipping.”
