Last month, 47,500 tonnes of cargo were transported along the Western route of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), an increase of 50% more than the figure for the same period last year, according to Oleg Belozerov, the General Director of Russian Railways.

He said, “We see signs of growth in cargo transport for June through Astara. 555 twenty-foot containers and 47,500 tonnes of cargo were transported.” He was speaking at a meeting with Rovshan Rustamov, the Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways, and Jabbarali Zakeri, the Head of Iranian Railways, in Moscow.

Following the meeting, the parties signed a trilateral protocol and decided to continue strengthening the commercial attractiveness of the route. They also agreed to create a digital corridor through the synchronisation of data exchange systems and the transition to paperless transport technology.

This will be further increased by the construction of the Rasht-Astara railway line, which will ultimately provide end-to-end connectivity and reduce cargo transport costs between Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and India to the Persian Gulf ports.
