Rosatom and Egypt are discussing the construction of new nuclear power units in the African country, including small and floating ones, Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev has stated, saying that “The Egyptian government is discussing the creation of new units with us, additional ones contracted under the El Dabaa project, and joint work on small, including floating, nuclear power plants, as well as creating centers of nuclear medicine.”
Likhachev also confirmed previously announced plans to supply nuclear fuel to the El Dabaa NPP, which is under construction in Egypt, in 2027, specifying that this will take place in H1 2027, as well as the timeline for connecting the first power unit to the grid in 2028. He added, “Our task is to gradually connect the units to the grid starting from 2028 through 2030.”
The El Dabaa NPP project has involved the construction of four power units of 1,200 MW each. These reactors are highly advanced and environmentally safe.
Egyptian Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat has also said that Egypt is holding negotiations with Rosatom on the possible construction of a small-capacity NPP in the country and will make a decision based on its needs.
Egypt’s nuclear strategy aims to secure reliable baseload electricity, save natural gas for export, and reduce carbon emissions.
