The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, has been visiting Astana to meet the Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev as well as Kazakhstan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ermek Kosherbayev.
Both sides commended the steady advancement of Russian-Kazakh relations as a comprehensive strategic partnership and alliance. They highlighted the strength of their large-scale trade, economic, and investment cooperation, their close and effective coordination within Eurasian integration frameworks, as well as the convergence and close alignment of their positions on key regional and international issues.
The foreign ministers discussed a broad range of issues related to expanding Russian-Kazakh cooperation across the political, trade and economic, cultural and humanitarian, and educational spheres, among others. They also reviewed progress in implementing key agreements reached by the leaders of the two countries.

Particular attention was given to cooperation within major Eurasian integration frameworks – the EAEU, CSTO, CIS, and SCO – as well as to the recently established International Russian Language Organisation, created at the initiative of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and other multilateral platforms, foremost among them the UN. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening a trusting political dialogue and to closely coordinating their positions on key regional and international issues.
Trade and economic ties between Kazakhstan and Russia showed signs of slowing in 2025. By the end of the year, bilateral trade reached US$27.4 billion, a slight decrease compared with the previous year.
During the talks, Sergey Lavrov provided the Kazakh side with a detailed overview of Russia’s approaches to resolving the Ukraine crisis.
The Action Plan for Cooperation between the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Kazakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs for 2027-2028 was also signed.
