Russia’s VSMPO-AVISMA is to supply welded titanium pipes for the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), which Rosatom state nuclear energy corporation is building in Egypt, Sverdlovsk Region Governor Denis Pasler has said. VSMPO-AVISMA is based in Sverdlovsk.
Pasler said that the company has launched serial production of pipes for heat-exchange equipment that would be in contact with seawater, stating that using titanium for this equipment is technologically driven, as it is used in the marine, energy, chemical, oil and gas, and aerospace industries, where standard materials quickly deteriorate under aggressive environments. The El Dabaa NPP is based on the coast and will use seawater to help with the cooling systems.
Rosatom is currently constructing the El Dabaa NPP in Egypt, the first in Africa. The NPP design calls for four 1200 MW power units, each with VVER-1200 reactors. Rosatom plans to begin power supply from the first power unit in 2028 and fully complete the plant in 2030.
VSMPO-AVISMA is a titanium producer with a full production cycle, from raw material processing to the production of highly machined finished products, and is the world’s largest titanium producer. The metal is only naturally found as an oxide; it can be reduced to produce a metal with a silver color, low density, and high strength that is resistant to corrosion in seawater, aqua regia, and chlorine. Egypt is a full member of BRICS.
