Russian Railways Rail Freight To China Up 8.5% In 10M 2024

Russian Railways has transported 145 million tonnes of cargo to China over the first 10 months of 2024, 8.5% more than in the same period of 2023, according to Sergey Pavlov, the Deputy head of Russian Railways. He was speaking at the “Effective Multimodal Logistics: Horizons of the Future” event during the Russian Transport Week conference.

According to Pavlov, Russian Railways, together with Atomflot, are developing multimodal transportation using the Arctic, Northern Sea Route (NSR) as an alternative to cargo delivery.

Pavlov added that “Since August of this year, more than 3,000 containers with spare parts for Chinese cars, as well as consumer goods, have arrived from Chinese ports to Arkhangelsk port. In total, 24,000 tonnes of cargo were transported along the NSR. 37,500 tonnes of Russian products were sent to China on the return trip. The benefits of transportation via the NSR are obvious, as this route is twice as short as the Suez Canal, while transportation along it is faster and safer.”
