Russia exported 14,500 tonnes of turkey to African countries in 2025, up 2.4 times compared to the figure for the previous year (6,100 tonnes), according to Russia’s Agroexport federal center. They were speaking at Russia’s Agrarian Policy: Product Safety and Quality Summit in Moscow on Tuesday (May 19). The value of these exports also grew to reach US$31.6 million, an increase from US$9.3 million.
These products were supplied to four countries: Benin (US $20.4 million), Democratic Republic of Congo (US $6.6 million), Gabon (US $2.1 million), and Guinea (US $1.3 million).
Meat consumption per capita in sub-Saharan Africa is around three times lower than the global average. However, as certain countries become more affluent, meat consumption rises as the population can afford to upgrade their diets.
Elsewhere, Russian supplies of turkey to the Middle East countries increased 1.9-fold to 5,200 tonnes, with their value growing 2.1 times to reach US$24.3 million. Russia now has an approved halal turkey meat production system in place, meaning it can reach out to more Muslim nations for meat exports.
Overall, Russia exported 38,700 tonnes of turkey in 2025, up 41.2% compared to the figure for the previous year (27,400 tonnes). Export revenue increased 39% to US$105.1 million, from US$75.6 million in 2024. Turkey production in Russia increased to 453,000 tonnes in 2025 from 438,000 tonnes in 2024.
