Mozambique’s Ambassador to Russia, Jose Mateus Muaria Katupha, has said that the country expects to strengthen contacts on gas issues with Gazprom and Novatek. Speaking at the the “North Caucasus: Space of Dialogue, Traditions and Development” forum he said that “We continue to work with Rosneft . But we need more specialists in gas development – Gazprom, Novatek – and we hope to strengthen contacts in this area. This includes training local specialists in the field of gas development. We are going to attract Russian specialists, and look for assistance from Russian companies.”
He added that there is interest on the part of Russian oil and gas companies in the gas projects in Mozambique’s Rovuma basin. Katupha said that “Russia is one of our strategic partners. There are Western companies, but Russia will receive special treatment. An intergovernmental meeting took place yesterday, and we considered companies that expressed a desire to come to Mozambique, especially companies that work in field development. We understand that the oil and gas industry is very complex, and we are gradually entering this industry, looking for those who will help us use our resources effectively, and of course we will gladly take advantage of Russian experience. Therefore, we will take part in the Russia-Africa forum at the end of this month and will look for partners in Russia.”

The Mozambique LNG project is a US$20 billion onshore liquefied natural gas development located on the Afungi peninsula in Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique. The current operator is TotalEnergies (26.5%) alongside partners Mitsui, (20%), ENH (15%), ONGC Videsh (10%), Beas Rovuma Energy (10%), BPRL (10%), and PTTEP (8.5%). It currently consists of two initial liquefaction trains producing 13.12 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), with a future expansion potential up to 43 MTPA. It is built on about 65 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas discovered in Area 1 of the Rovuma Basin.
