Multiculturalism Not Dead: The Russia-India Bollywood Film “Persimmon Of My Love” Gets Rave Reviews

Published on June 25, 2026

The jointly-produced Russia-India film, a cops and robbers romance comedy entitled “Persimmon Of My Love,” has been playing to enthusiastic reviews in Russia, where it has had a wide national release.

This large-scale cross-border production was filmed entirely in India and originally premiered in Moscow in April. The film utilizes the infrastructure of the Bollywood industry, with over 350 international crew members on set and scenes featuring up to 1,000 performers. Shooting took place across vibrant studios in Mumbai and historic heritage sites in the cities of Udaipur and Jodhpur in Rajasthan.

The musical comedy features classic song-and-dance numbers blended with Russian humor and drama. The story revolves around two brothers separated in childhood who grow up to be polar opposites: an upright police officer and a charismatic criminal. Produced by TNT TV and MyWayStudio with backing from the Russian Film Foundation, the cast stars Well-known Russian film and television actors Demis Karibidis and Mikhail Galustyan star as brothers Ramash and Shamar. The cast also includes popular Russian actors such as Adila Ragimova, Albina Kabalina, Artur Vakha, and Sergey Rost.

Director Marius Weisberg highlighted the professionalism of the Indian crew: “I was impressed by the professionalism and the speed at which the Bollywood teams worked. This is an enormous industry capable of handling the greatest production challenges.”

He noted that the project is especially significant against the backdrop of expanding cultural and economic cooperation between Russia and India, as well as broader potential collaboration amongst BRICS partners. Given that the BRICS also includes countries already involved in joint film production such as Brazil, China, Egypt, Iran and Indonesia, the success of ‘Persimmon Of My Love’ suggests that multiculturalism is not ‘dead’ as some Western commentators have suggested here, here and here – it is instead flourishing in the Global South – and merely bypassing the West.
