Russia’s MC-21 Aircraft On Track For June 2027 Certification

Published on June 26, 2026

Certification of the MC-21 medium-haul passenger airliner is planned for June 2027, Vitaly Naryshkin, chief designer of the MC-21 at the Yakovlev Corporation, has stated.

Russian President Vladimir Putin examined the next generation of Russian commercial airliners – the Ilyushin Il-114-300, SJ-100 and the MC-21—at the Gromov Flight Research Institute on Wednesday (June 24).

Putin was briefed about the flight tests of the MC-21. Two planes are undergoing tests, making 200 test flights, including 101 certification flights. The planes are expected to make a total of 232 certification flights, the successful deployment of which will mean they can then be approved for service.

The Yakovlev MC-21 is Russia’s newest twin-engine, short-to-medium-range narrow-body airliner designed by the Yakovlev Design Bureau to challenge the global dominance of the Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX families. Originally reliant on Western aerospace parts, the program has undergone a massive “Russification” overhaul to replace all foreign components with domestic alternatives following international sanctions. The strategic goal remains to increase the serial production of the MC-21 at the Irkutsk Aviation Plant. It is planned to reach 36 aircraft per year by 2028-2029 and then increase the rate to 72 aircraft per year.
