Russia supplied 400 tonnes to the Turkish market in the first half of 2026, according to Russia’s Agriculture Minister Oksana Lut. She was speaking during a meeting with Ibrahim Yumakli, Turkiye’s Agriculture and Forestry Minister. Russia secured the right to export beef to Turkiye just last year.
Lut proposed expanding the group of Turkish importers by involving private companies. Beef supplies are currently handled centrally through the Turkish Meat and Milk Board, however Russian producers are prepared to supply chilled beef and premium cuts directly. The export potential to Turkiye is estimated at 5,000-10,000 tonnes per year.
Per capita beef consumption in Türkiye is estimated at approximately 20 kg per year according to industry associations. It accounts for the vast majority of red meat consumption in Türkiye (roughly 75% to 90% of total red meat), as pork is practically non-existent in the domestic diet.
The two countries boosted mutual trade in agricultural products 5.5% in 2025, with Russia raising exports 9.2%, primarily grains and legumes, as well as oil and fat products, while imports from Turkiye mainly comprise fruit and vegetables.
