Russian President Vladimir Putin is holding talks in the Kremlin with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who has arrived on a working visit. The purpose is to discuss “The state and prospects of deepening the Russian-Indonesian strategic partnership” as well as current international issues, according to the Kremlin press service. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, Rosatom head Alexey Likhachev, and Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina are among the participants.
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted “very diverse interaction” between the countries. The Indonesian cabinet secretary said leaders will discuss energy security and the US-Israel-Iran conflict.
Upon opening the discussions, the strategic nature of the relationship between Russia and Indonesia is primarily manifested in the economy, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, adding that trade turnover between the countries grew by 12.5% in 2025.
Putin stated that “the strategic nature of our relationship manifests itself, first and foremost, in the economic sphere, of course. Last year our trade turnover grew by 12.5%. Unfortunately, there were some adjustments at the beginning of this year, but our intergovernmental commission is actively working. I hope your visit will also help us find necessary solutions to ensure our situation remains stable and shows growth this year.”
In terms of energy and the supply chain problems in the Middle East, Indonesia has inquired about Russian oil product supplies, with negotiations on long-term contracts underway, Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev, who has also been attending these talks, has stated. Tsivilev said that “Indonesia used to buy all its products primarily from other countries, such as the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and Australia, but they are now regarding this issue in light of the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz and the reliability of supplies. We are currently looking seriously at long-term contracts at mutually beneficial prices.”
We will summarise the Russia-Indonesia discussions in an upcoming article later in the week.
