The Russian Agricultural Minister, Oxsana Lut has said that there are very good Chinese developments in poultry farming as part of scientific cooperation in animal husbandry, and the countries are planning joint programs with Russia’s Smena-9 (a chicken crossbreed). She was speaking at the Sprouts: Russia and China international forum in Kazan.
The Smena 9 is a high-productivity meat-type broiler chicken crossbreed developed by Russian scientists and breeders. Officially registered in 2020, it was created as a domestic alternative to reduce reliance on Western imported poultry genetics and enhance food security.
The variant is noted for high yields of pectoral (breast) muscles and a rich gourmet flavor profile in both meat and broth. It is significantly cheaper (roughly 25% to 50%) than other major international commercial crossbreeds and has been bred specifically to adapt well to local husbandry and environmental conditions in Russian poultry farms.
Backed by substantial state funding and specialized breeding centers the Smena 9 serves as a focal point for domestic agricultural self-sufficiency. This is because the major internationally used crossbreeds, such as the Ross 308 and the Cobb 500 were developed and are distributed by Western firms. With food security an increasing issue, Russia intends to compete with Western chicken crossbreeds and is looking to export the Smena 9 breed to new markets in Africa and other regions as countries worldwide look to increase their protection against the potential of incurring Western trade sanctions and other political tactics designed to ensure only Western products reach these markets.
