Russia exported 3.5 tonnes of frozen crabs to Mexico worth about US$200,000 between January and May this year, according to the Agroexport federal center. This is the first ever delivery of Russian crabs to Mexico.
In addition to crabs, over the past five months Russia exported instant coffee worth over US$1.7 million, active yeast worth over US$530,000, beer valued at over US$10,000, and other agricultural products to Mexico.
In terms of annual per capita intake of seafood, Mexico has an estimated consumption of around 3.7 kg per annum, about 50% of that in other Latin American markets. According to 6Wresearch, the Mexico crab market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.2% during the period of 2025-2031. One of the key growth drivers is the rising consumer awareness of the health benefits associated with crab consumption, such as high protein content and essential vitamins and minerals. Russia is the world’s largest exporter of crabs, with the Kamchatka Crab a prized gourmet species. Mexican crab recipes include Salpicon and Ceviche, as well as use in salads.
