Russia, India, Sign Significant Rare Earths Development Agreements

Published on May 24, 2026

The Giredmet Institute, a subsidiary of Russia’s Rosatom nuclear energy corporation, has signed several memorandums of understanding and agreements with international partners in the rare earth metals (REM) sector during the Redmet 2026 congress. The agreements are aimed at developing cooperation in the deep processing of rare and rare earth metals, the production of high-purity materials, and the creation of joint industrial capacities.

Of special note is an agreement signed with the Indian company Nexon Geochem who are based in Hyderabad. This focuses on joint research and development of technologies for the deep processing of REM raw materials. The parties intend to implement full-cycle projects, from the production of high-purity metals and compounds to the manufacture of materials for the electronics, chemical, and nuclear industries. Nexon Geochem specialise in rare earth magnets and are a key part of India’s hi-tech industrial development.

Another was signed with the Indian Technology Innovation in Exploration & Mining Foundation (TEXMiN). This provides for joint research and development of technologies for the production of rare-earth permanent magnets neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB), including the full metallurgical cycle, pilot validation of Giredmet’s technologies at the TEXMiN site, and projects to extract rare-earth elements from tailings dams, old waste dumps, and spent magnets.

Konstantin Ivanovskikh, Deputy Director for Science and Innovation at Giredmet, said “We are moving toward the practical implementation of projects to establish rare-earth magnet production with our Indian partners.”

Rare-earth magnets are strong, permanent magnets made from alloys of rare-earth elements. They are key components in computer hard drives, wind turbines, electric motors, biomedical devices and other industrial applications. With a global move to electric power, stakes in this industry sector are vital. Global rare earth reserves are concentrated in China, Brazil, India, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Russia, Canada, and Greenland, which is the reason why President Trump has been so bullish about the potential United States annexation of the latter two areas.

Giredmet also held talks with the Joint Russian-Vietnamese Tropical Research and Technology Center as part of the Redmet congress.
