According to appraisals by analysts at Russia’s FESCO transport group, the container market volume of Russia across January to August 2026 reached 4.72 million twenty-foot equivalent units, which stands 6% higher than during the corresponding period of last year.
Import shipments continue making the primary contribution to market growth, expanding by 16% to 2.03 million twenty-foot equivalent units. Domestic transport grew as well by 3.4%, reaching 1.06 million twenty-foot equivalent units. Exports contracted by 3% to 1.24 million twenty-foot equivalent units, while railway transit volume remained virtually flat, reaching 384,000 TEU. In August, the container market contracted by 0.9% compared to the same month of last year.
The container market volume of Russia over the initial seven months of 2026 reached 4.17 million twenty-foot equivalent units, growing by 7% compared to the corresponding period of last year.
Imports also remain the largest growing market segment: volume expanded by 17%, reaching nearly 1.8 million twenty-foot equivalent units. Domestic container shipments grew by 3% to 924,000 TEU, while rail transit rose by 1% to 335 thousand twenty-foot equivalent units. Export dispatches contracted by 1% to 1.12 million twenty-foot equivalent units.
In July, container carriage volume expanded by 14.8% compared to July 2025.
The container market volume of Russia over the initial half year of 2026 reached 3.47 million twenty-foot equivalent units, which is 6% above the level of the corresponding period of last year.
The container market of Russia incorporates foreign trade and transit shipments via Russian seaports, foreign trade and transit movements across overland border crossings along the Russian Railways network (excluding China to Europe transit), domestic Russian container shipments along the Russian Railways network, and coastal cabotage traffic.
