Transport connectivity and development of renewable energy can become driver of sustainable development in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), according to Arzybek Kozhoshev, the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure of the Eurasian Economic Commission. He was speaking at the Global Mountain Dialogue conference in Bishkek, dedicated to the prospects for sustainable development of mountain regions. In his speech, Kozhoshev noted the importance of improving transport and energy infrastructure as the main factor in improving the quality of life in these regions.
Kozhoshev said that Kyrgyzstan, with its unique mountainous landscape and significant natural resources, continues to demonstrate positive economic dynamics. In 2024, the country’s economy showed record results, and GDP grew by 9%. However, mountainous regions face special challenges such as isolation, climate risks, and internal migration, which require a special approach to public policy development.

As part of the infrastructure development, he highlighted key projects for the construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan and Balykchi-Kochkor-Makmal railways, as well as strengthening air links with remote regions.
Special attention was paid to the energy topic. Kyrgyzstan needs to continue to actively develop the potential of renewable energy sources, which will help ensure a sustainable energy supply for mountainous areas and will contribute to reducing emissions and preserving glaciers.
“The development of renewable energy sources and the disclosure of hydropower potential is an important step to increase energy availability in remote mountainous areas, as well as reduce dependence on external energy supplies, which is especially important for the mountainous regions of the EAEU countries” Kozhokov stressed.
Russia’s Rosatom are preparing to construct significant wind and solar power generating plants in Kyrgyzstan from next year.
The Minister concluded his speech by calling for increased international cooperation to realize the potential of mountain regions and ensure their sustainable economic growth.
